🌱Gem Faire Returns! + The Story Behind Carina's Bakery

Your five-minute guide to everything worth knowing today in town.

(Patch Media)

Rise and shine, Beaverton! Here's everything you need to know to get this Friday started off right.

First, today's weather:

A passing morning shower. High: 53 Low: 40.

Here are the top stories in Beaverton today:

  1. Carina's Bakery owner Carina Comer is legally blind, and she says she missed out on job opportunities because employers were unwilling to hire a person with disabilities. So she opened her own shop in downtown Beaverton four years ago. Her business is thriving these days, and Comer says she's in the position to hire more people with disabilities and possibly even open more shops. (KGW.com)
  2. A family remembers a young Beaverton boy who died unexpectedly as brilliant and giving. Eight-year-old Amari King Churchwell went home from school feeling sick last Monday, and his condition quickly worsened. Amari had an undiagnosed mass near his brain stem, causing his brain to swell, which led to his death. The Churchwell family says help from the community has been "incredible." They've given their okay to OHSU to investigate the third grader's condition with the hope of helping families like them in the future. (KPTV.com)
  3. Get ready for an awesome show — sky conditions permitting. The Leonid meteors are set to peak over Beaverton just ahead of a blood lunar eclipse, writes Dan Shalin of the Beaverton Patch. The fall meteor showers run through November 30, with the Taurid meteors continuing through early December. Geminid meteors begin around December 13.
  4. Beaverton police helped investigate a man who was convicted in a child sex abuse case earlier this month. A Washington County Circuit Court found Erik Shane Zweygartt guilty of five counts of using a child in display of sexually explicit conduct and five counts of second-degree encouraging child sexual abuse in a bench trial. Zweygartt is scheduled to be sentenced December 17. (Washington County DA)
  5. Beaverton is set to be well-represented on the screen in the near future. Disney+ will feature Liz Marek, a cake decorator from our area on the upcoming series Foodtastic, and former Beaverton resident Lisa Hepner showcases her writing skills in a plethora of holiday episodes on the Hallmark Channel, Lifetime, Netflix and others. Check out the complete list of famous Oregonians gracing the small screen at oregonlive.com.
