Here are the top five stories in Beaverton today:
- A man has been arrested on suspicion of a murder that took place at a Tigard shelter for those experiencing homelessness on June 26. Police took Harrison Douglas-Myles McBride, 26, into custody for the death of William Edward Mayberry, 56. The incident took place just before 1 p.m. on Sunday in the backyard of the Just Compassion Resource Center. (KOIN.com)
- A strike by nurses at Providence St. Vincent now appears possible, reports Colin Miner. Oregon Nurses Association (ONA), which represents the nurses, said the voters overwhelmingly rejected the tentative contract by a 4-1 margin last Thursday. The ONA, who worked to negotiate the terms of the contract with hospital administrators, recommended that the nurses accept it. (Patch)
- A controversial tournament is set to come to Washington County, but a number of officials aren't happy about it. LIV Golf, a Saudi Arabian-backed league that posits itself as a rival to the PGA, is bringing its second tournament to the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains on June 30 - July 2. Beaverton's Mayor Beaty and Sen. Ron Wyden were among prominent Oregonians to voice their dismay at the event because of the Saudi government's human rights policies and association with the man who fled charges of killing Fallon Smart, 15, on Southeast Hawthorn Boulevard back in 2016. (Golf Channel)
- A scary crash closed Highway 219 near Jackson Bottom Wetlands on Monday afternoon when a vehicle left its lane and went down a steep embankment. Rescue workers were forced to extricate the driver, whose condition was unknown at the time of the post. (Twitter)
- Construction is set to begin on Roy Rogers Road on July 1. The project will add lanes, a multi-use path and other improvements to Roy Rogers Road from Chicken Creek to Borchers Drive. Construction will also enable the installation of a 66-inch diameter water pipeline, which is part of the Willamette Water Supply System. Click over to the press release from Washington County to see a map of the affected routes and view an online project open house.
