Here are the top five stories today in Beaverton:

  1. Toma Matisoff, the man arrested Sunday for the hit-and-run accident that killed 57-year-old Karen Kane and injured her 86-year-old mother as they crossed Hall Boulevard in March, was released from jail less than 24 hours after his arrest. Despite police, the district attorney and a judge attempting to raise the amount of bail required and the fact that he was trying to escape as police took him into custody, Matisoff was let go on $10,000 bail Monday. Police also suspect Matisoff of several burglaries and thefts since the fatal crash. (KPTV)
  2. The first-ever official Washington County celebration of Juneteenth kicked off with the raising of the Juneteenth flag over the county public services building on Monday. The flag will fly over the building for one week and be removed on Monday, June 20, though the holiday falls on Sunday this year. Juneteenth celebrates June 19, 1865, when the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas, heard that President Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation some two years earlier. (Patch)
  3. A Hillsboro McDonald's has honored an employee of 37 years who, despite a medical condition, only called in sick one day during that entire time and only then because he was having surgery. Keith Eakland was recognized for his service to the company and the community by the McDonald's Thank You Crew. They presented him with season tickets to the Hillsboro Hops and his very own custom Hops jersey. Eakland will get to throw out the first ceremonial pitch at the June 24 game. (KOIN)
  4. It's graduation time for Beaverton's high school seniors. Pamplin Media Group has done a nice job of putting together slide shows for area high schools. Check out Beaverton High School, Southridge High School, Valley Catholic High School, Sunset High School and Aloha High School graduates with their smiles, mortar boards and big plans.
  5. There have been a couple of stories about Washington County residents, moved by the events in Uvalde, Texas, and others, choosing to turn their firearms over to police. Maybe other people are wondering how best to do it. In Washington County, residents who want to relinquish firearms are asked to call the Washington County Sheriff's Office non-emergency number, 503-629-0111, and tell the dispatcher they would like an officer to come to their home and collect the weapon. In Hillsboro, the police department would like you to call that same non-emergency number and make an appointment with the property/evidence unit to hand over weapons. (KOIN)
