It's a fresh week and a new month, Beaverton! Let's get you started with everything you need to know going on today in and around town.

First, today's weather:

Cooler; a little p.m. rain. High: 51 Low: 45.

Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:

  1. Highway 6 was the site of a fatal crash on Sunday morning. The popular route to the coast was closed nine miles east of Tillamook as emergency crews responded. Authorities report that one person died on the scene, and three others were taken to hospitals with injuries. One vehicle involved in the three-car accident fled the scene, but the Tillamook County Sheriff was able to locate the driver later that day. (KOIN)
  2. A big 'woohoo!' goes out to PCC's Panthers, who qualified for the NWAC Women's Soccer Championships. They'll go on to host a first-round playoff game at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, November 3, at the THPRD fields adjacent to PCC Rock Creek. Hit up the PCC Panthers athletics page for info on how to attend the games. (Press Release Desk)
  3. More news of the sporting variety: Oregon Class 6A high school girls and boys soccer playoffs began over the weekend and will continue through the week. The first round saw quite a few victories for our home teams, including Westview, Sunset and Beaverton. Check out OregonLive for scores and schedules.
  4. Beaverton School District congratulated 22 students who have been honored with Presidential Volunteer Service Awards from the Chetana Foundation. The awards collectively represent about 2,200 volunteer hours within the community. The Portland-based foundation embraces the notion of 'selfless service to community.' (Twitter)
  5. Here's a bit of bad news if you have natural gas in your home: The Oregon Public Utility Commission says NW Natural's rates are slated to go up by about 13 percent, starting November 1. The agency attributes the hike to "significant weather-related events and the increase in natural gas prices worldwide." It could be worse, though— some estimates say U.S. households will, on average, spend 30 percent more on heating this winter. Get all the details at KATU.
