Happy Sunday, Beaverton! Let's get you all caught up to start today off on an informed note.

First, today's weather:

Here are the top five stories in Beaverton today:

  1. A fire in downtown Hillsboro displaced 17 people on Saturday afternoon. Firefighters responded to an apartment complex near East Main Street and Southeast 12th Avenue, where black smoke was billowing from the building. An investigation revealed that a baseboard heater ignited combustible material in a bedroom. No injuries were reported. (KGW)
  2. The Beaverton School District made national news a few times in 2021. Click over to the article to relive one of those instances — when Jeanette Schade campaigned for a seat on the Beaverton School Board. Schade's failed campaign gained her notoriety but not a spot on the school board. (Pamplin Media Group; click here for free access with your WCCLS login or click here if you have a paid subscription)
  3. The Les Schwab Invitational ended in success for Beaverton High School boys. They took home the third-place trophy despite entering the competition underrated. Take a look at the action over at scorebooklive.com.
  4. The Washington County Circuit Court sentenced a local man to 75 months in prison late last month. The Washington County DA website reports that Scott Christopher Smith, 47, was convicted of abusing a 12-year-old child in 2018, although Smith's actions didn't come to light until 2020. The DA's office thanks DHS and Beaverton police for their work on the case.
  5. Looks like our winter storm is over. Washington County reports that they've deactivated Snow Zones, which were roads where the agency was requiring traction devices.
