🌱Hops Retire Coach Petrick's Jersey + Tigard's Chicken Problem

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Beaverton.

(Patch Media)

Hello Beaverton. We've made it to Thursday already. Let's take a look at all the news you need to start your day right.

First, today's weather:

Cloudy but warming. High: 55 Low: 38

Here are the top five stories in Beaverton today:

  1. City officials in Tigard are considering regulating backyard chickens and livestock. Facing numerous complaints centering on two specific properties, city staffers are reviewing existing city codes. City officials loosened the regulations in 2018 but now are considering reinstating some of the provisions. At issue are the complaints by Southwest Ann Street residents who say that one house in particular where chickens and goats are kept has resulted in rat infestation issues. (Tigard Life)
  2. Beaverton Mayor Lacey Beaty gave her state of the city address at city hall Wednesday. She talked about the increase of homelessness and the need for additional facilities among other topics. The Beaverton Downtown Association has just published an interview with the mayor talking about her values and the challenges of her office. She says growing up with a single mom and being a combat veteran helped her prepare for the hardest job she's ever done. (BDA blog)
  3. Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue have published a spring edition of its online Safety First newsletter. This edition helps homeowners and others prepare for the wildfire season coming up this summer. The preparation breaks down into Ready, Set, Go simple steps including forming emergency plans and preparing emergency kits. The most recent edition of the Safety First newsletters is available here.
  4. The Hillsboro Hops, the minor league baseball team, announced it will honor coach Ben Petrick by retiring his jersey number in a pre-game ceremony on opening night, April 8. Petrick was a Glencoe High School athlete who went on to play in the major leagues with the Colorado Rockies before returning to Hillsboro to coach the Hillsboro Hops. (Portland Tribune, subscription required.)
  5. Alice Custodio was named a Remarkable Woman finalist Tuesday for her contributions to the Forest Grove community. She has done many things in the community including coaching Little League and volunteers three times a week for veterans lunches. For four years she has been the OSEA state chairman for the Elks Drug Awareness program. Remarkable Women is a national Nexstar Media initiative to honor women's contributions to their communities in a variety of areas. (KOIN)
