🌱Intel 'Mega Lab' Coming To Hillsboro + WashCo Short Public Defenders

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Beaverton.

(Patch Media)

Morning, Beaverton! Let's get you all caught up to start this Friday, May 20 off on an informed note. Here are the most important things happening today in Beaverton.

First, today's weather:

Partial sunshine. High: 64 Low: 43.

Here are the top five stories today in Beaverton:

  1. Washington County is suffering a shortage of public defenders, reports Troy Shinn. Although the area hasn't been hit as hard as some parts of the state, the situation is forcing many defendants to sit in jail awaiting representation before they can be arraigned. Experts attribute the problem, in part, to lack of funding. (Pamplin Media Group, subscription required)
  2. The Tualatin Valley is a great place to be this weekend if you're a bike enthusiast. There are two events to anticipate: The Banana Belt Road Race starts at 10 a.m. at Henry Hagg Lake. It's a 10-mile loop race, and you can register at this link or at the park. Once you're done there, zip over to downtown Beaverton for the Bike Beaverton at Beaverton City Park, which starts at 1 p.m. and runs to 3 p.m. (BikePortland.org)
  3. More high-tech jobs are coming to the area soon! Intel announced on Thursday that it will be adding a $700 million research center to its Jones Farm campus in Hillsboro in late 2023. The 200,000-square-foot facility will serve as a "mega lab" for development of technology to help make data centers more efficient. (OregonLive)
  4. The latest Beaverton Farmers Market newsletter is live! This week's edition offers some ideas for starting an herb garden and how to use that vegan chorizo that you'll have the opportunity to grab from the Don Felipe booth Saturday. Also noteworthy are a handful of new vendors to peruse, including a gluten-free baking company called Not Bread and Tutuilla True Fish Co., which sells fresh and smoked steelhead salmon.
  5. Celebrate diversity on the Westside with ideas from Portland Tribune's latest A&E roundup. World-class taiko master Kenny Endo will be at The Reser on Sunday, Ballet Folklorico Academia Gabriela performs an exploration of Mexico's diversity at The Reser with "Que Bonita Es Mi Tierra" on June 19 and Neftali Rivera and Grupo Borikuas bring the sounds of West Africa, The Caribbean and Puerto Rico to The Walters Center on June 10.

From my notebook:

  • Feeling stressed? Well, you're not alone. An annual survey by the American Psychological Association revealed that Americans are feeling more stress than quite possibly ever before. The primary triggers? The war in Ukraine and inflation. The ongoing pandemic and supply chain issues are other topics that have many folks clenching. (KOIN.com)
  • Hey ya'll — looks like you can still score tickets to Saturday's Old Town Wine Walk. It's a tour of nine local businesses, each 'paired' with a Tualatin Valley winemaker and, of course, samplings of the wine. (Instagram)
