Here are the top stories in Beaverton today:

  1. Ever wonder what your neighbor's paycheck looks like? Maybe just a little, right? Well, so do some folks over at the Oregonian, so they've delved into a list of median incomes at Oregon's largest employers with a special focus on disparity between CEO earnings and the average worker. Nike employees, for instance, make about $36,000 on average, while CEO John Donahoe made nearly $33 million in 2020. The article also noted that statewide, most workers' wages increased by about 10 percent. Hospitality workers earned on average $3,600 more in 2020 than in the year prior. (OregonLive)
  2. As the 20-year anniversary of 9/11 draws closer, Reporter Douglas Perry has gathered narratives of Oregonians who witnessed the attacks. One of those narratives belongs to Beaverton High School alum Jason Baseden, who was 29 and working for the Discovery Channel in Manhattan at the time. Read his recollections of fleeing the city amidst panic, dust and ashes. (OregonLive)
  3. The Cedar Mill News provides details about local schools' guidelines for COVID-19. BSD students are required to wear masks for all activities, indoors and outdoors. Schools will make exceptions for those playing musical instruments that require opening the mouth and choir members, and the district is providing special slitted masks for that purpose. Prospective volunteers are required to provide proof of vaccination. Students experiencing COVID-19 symptoms at school will be isolated and given a COVID-19 test. (Cedar Mill News)
  4. In 2016, the Cedar Mill, Bonny Slope, Oak Hills and Bethany areas were the center of the largest infestation of Japanese beetles ever found in the state. The invasive species is harmful to 300 species of plants, including agricultural crops. Since then, the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) has embarked on an eradication project, with significant decreases in bug population. Click the link to read ODA's report on the progress. (Cedar Mill News)
  5. The Hillsboro Hops made history Sunday as the team welcomed the league's first-ever female first-base coach. The noteworthy woman, Ronnie Gajownik, works for the team as a player development coach. The Hops faced Eugene Emeralds again after the Saturday game was suspended due to a lighting issue. (Twitter)

  • Today is Labor Day. Beaverton City Government shares the history of this national holiday. Click over to learn more! (Facebook)
  • It's also National Read a Book Day. But don't head to Beaverton City Library, `cuz it's closed today. Why not head to a local bookstore, like Jan's Paperbacks or even Barnes & Nobles before it closes for good, to discover something new to read on your (hopefully) day off.
  • Beaverton City Library: "September is Library Card Sign-up Month! If access to 1.5 million items from 16 library locations isn't enough of a reason to sign-up, WCCLS has a few more incentives." Find out what they are by heading to their Facebook page!
