Happy Saturday, neighbors! Here's what's happening around town today.

First, today's weather:

Cloudy. High: 64 Low: 50.

Here are the top stories in Beaverton today:

  1. Congrats Beaverton students and their families! Local graduation rates exceed the state average, according to analysis by Colin Miner at Beaverton Patch. Despite challenges caused by the pandemic, BSD helped 89 percent of 12th graders graduate on time last year. The statewide average was 83 percent.
  2. Not everything is going swimmingly in terms of graduation rates for BSD students, though. Elizabeth Miller reports on the dramatic decrease in 9th graders who are on track for graduation. Pre-pandemic, the district reported 89 percent of these students were on track, whereas the 2020-2021 school year saw just over 80 percent in that category. The return to in-person schooling might help those numbers, and district officials say they've implemented Canvas software to flag students who are falling behind. (KLCC)
  3. A man who robbed the Aloha Chevron gas station on TV Highway back in May has been sentenced to nine years in prison. Along with the robbery, Kenrry Hoag Bay, 29, was convicted of stealing three vehicles, committing five separate identity thefts and driving under the influence of intoxicants at least twice, all of which he accomplished within a two-month period. Officers apprehended Bay at the scene of a car accident on May 22. (KPTV.com)
  4. One of the area's most elite schools is facing controversy. Amidst official investigations into the school's culture, a long-term librarian stands accused of sexual abuse. The Caitlin Gabel School placed Lynn Silbernagel on leave last year when the Oregon Department of Human Services informed administrators of a report of sexual contact between Silbernagel and an eighth-grader over twenty years prior. Zane Sparling reports that the school is currently facing lawsuits from 27 individuals with possible damages totaling $80,850,000. Read the whole story at Pamplin Media Group.
  5. Until recently, Oregon was one of only two states that allowed non-unanimous jury convictions for felony charges. The U.S. Supreme Court banned such convictions last year in Ramos v. Louisiana. Get the Washington County District Attorney's take on the situation over at Pamplin Media Group.
