Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:
- Most of us who are old enough to remember the shocking events that transpired on September 11, 2001 know exactly where we were then. The City Of Beaverton issued a statement in honor of the 20th Anniversary of the tragedy and 9/11 Day, encouraging "joining in acts of volunteer service" as a way to commemorate the occasion. Mayor Beaty stated that even "small acts of kindness" are a meaningful way to contribute. (Press Release Desk)
- Spanish Heritage Month begins September 15, and Washington County government has issued a proclamation in recognition of the contributions and influence of Latinx peoples to the local community. The Hispanic population represents approximately 17.9 percent of Washington County's total population. This year's theme is "Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope." - A member of Beaverton's renowned PDX Fencing club was severely injured in a shooting in Georgia last month. Jamie Willemse was in Atlanta on August 28 when her Lyft vehicle inadvertently drove through an active gun battle. A stray bullet struck Willemse, collapsing her lung and leaving her critically injured. She is recovering in Atlanta. Willemse was shot on her way to celebrate her 3rd place win in Women's Saber Over 50 age group when the incident took place. (Pamplin Media Group)
- The Portland metro area became home to over 11,000 Californians on average each year, according to the most recent Census data. That may sound like a lot, but economists say migration to the area has actually slowed in recent decades. Read the article on OregonLive to find out why.
- One of the primary routes from Beaverton to the coast was closed temporarily on Sunday due to a fatal accident. The multiple-car crash involved a rollover vehicle on Highway 6 between Tillamook and Forest Grove. Both lanes were closed, and authorities asked travelers to use alternative routes. Washington County Sheriff's Office has not yet released any more details. (KATU)
