Welcome back, Beaverton! Let's get you all caught up to start this rainy Sunday, November 14, off on an informed note. Read on for the latest COVID numbers, where to make a moss ball today and where to find pictures of our very, very wet parks.

First, today's weather:

Cloudy with a shower or two. High: 61 Low: 56.

Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:

  1. Thousands show up at Beaverton vax clinic on Friday, including a handful of protesters, reports Lisa Balick. Aloha-Huber Park School hosted the event in coordination with Virginia Garcia, which drew around 2,000 locals looking to get the shot. Organizers say that the event was a success since they were able to use up thousands of the now-available pediatric doses. (KOIN.com)
  2. The wet weather and a downed tree spelled trouble for a driver near North Plains on Thursday. Jeff Skeels couldn't avoid a tree that fell in the roadway and luckily escaped in need of only a few stitches; his 7-year-old son suffered a concussion. It's a good reminder to be extra careful during heavy rain. Skeels says, "Just be really cautious of what's in front of you, because that tree down on the road, you have no time to react." (KPTV.com)
  3. Click over to a charming City Talk segment to hear from Mayor Beaty about her first year in office. Eric Schmidt and the mayor talk about the transition away from a strong mayor system. Beaty also discusses dealing with the pandemic, including the challenges of finding affordable childcare and where federal pandemic recovery dollars are headed locally. Other topics included the new public safety center, adequate housing and much more. (MACC TVCTV)
  4. And here are your latest COVID-19 numbers for our area: Washington County reported 165 new cases on Thursday, along with four deaths (three men and one woman). For all instances of COVID in Oregon, approximately 29 percent were considered "breakthrough" cases affecting already-vaccinated individuals. (KATU.com)
  5. One of the results of City Council's session last Tuesday was the adoption of guidelines for choosing where to place Beaverton's future permanent homeless shelter. Sara King, a project manager for the City of Beaverton, shared a slideshow of Shelter Siting Guidelines, which included easy access to transit and community services and a design that would provide privacy for tenants.
