🌱Local Toddler Faces Rare Disorder + Home Depot Thieves Arrested

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Beaverton.

(Patch Media)

Welcome back, Beaverton! Let's get you all caught up to start this Saturday off on an informed note. Here's what's happening around Beaverton today.

First, today's weather:

Windy with rain. High: 48 Low: 39.

Here are the top stories in Beaverton today:

  1. A Home Depot in Beaverton was the site of arrests on November 30 when police took three individuals into custody for a string of thefts. The three suspects allegedly stole thousands of dollars in electrical wire and tools from a Home Depot on SW Sequoia Parkway. They are also reportedly part of an organized group from California targeting the home improvement stores. Learn more about the crimes at KATU.
  2. Get oregonlive.com's restaurant review of Top Burmese — or you could (and should!) just go test it out yourself ;-). Michael Russell explains the history behind the nearly-iconic Beaverton and Northwest Portland venues, including the advent of the service robots. Russell's analysis? The famous fermented tea leaf salad isn't for everyone, but the samosas are a sure win. (Subscription required)
  3. It's every parents' worst fear: A Beaverton toddler is fighting an extreme gene mutation. Raiden Pham suffers from a UBA-5 gene mutation, a life-threatening progressive neurological disorder. His parents have hope: Raiden's dad, Tommy, has contacts in the medical research field and was able to connect with the University of Massachusetts, where researchers are interested in developing gene therapy for the mutation. Read more of Raiden's story and find out ways to help via KOIN.com.
  4. This last Friday was a stressful one at Highland Park Middle School after a student was allegedly overheard speaking about bringing a bomb or weapons to class. Authorities responded with a bag search, but their hands were tied — legally, they can only search one class and students have the right to opt out. Although law enforcement researched the situation and discovered a lack of credibility to the threats, Beaverton Patch reports that additional school resource officers were on duty within the district.
  5. Got business to do in City Hall? Visit the Press Release Desk to find out more about holiday-related closures, such as those at the Beaverton Building beginning at noon on December 23. The facility will reopen for regular hours on December 27.
