🌱Mayor Beaty On Portland Governance + St. V. Nurses Consider Strike

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Beaverton.

(Patch Media)

Morning, neighbors! It's me again, Ash DeMello, your host of the Beaverton Daily.

First, today's weather:

Rain at times. High: 53 Low: 45.

Here are the top five stories today in Beaverton:

  1. Mayor Lacey Beaty says Portland can learn something from Beaverton's charter change. Beaverton opted to place power in the hands of a professional city manager back in 2021, and Beaty reflects on the challenges and benefits that have ensued in the months that followed. Portland's government is considering a change, and Beaty implies that the councilor-manager system might be a better fit for Beaverton's neighbor city. (KGW.com)
  2. Check out DEFY Beaverton in a recent edition of On the Go with Joe via Fox 12 Oregon. The 30,000 square foot 'air sports' gym offers indoor slides, massive trampolines, obstacle courses and more to keep the whole family entertained and active. The venue held its grand opening April 1.
  3. Plant-based dining is sprouting up all over Beaverton. Reporter Grant Butler showcases five local spots where dairy, eggs and meat are not an option (or at least easily avoidable). Highlights include Top Burmese Bistro Royale's Shan Noodle entree, The Sudra and The MOCKing Bird's faux chicken options at BG's Food Cartel. (OregonLive)
  4. Providence St. Vincent nurses began voting on whether to authorize a strike on Tuesday. They'll have until May 3 to voice their opinion on whether the hospital is guilty of "repeated unfair labor practices," identified by the Oregon Nurses Association. If nurses vote to commence with a strike, the hospital will have ten days to prepare for a possible nurse shortage. (Beaverton Patch)
  5. Ziply Fiber doubled multi-gig reach, and Beaverton residents contributed to the company's growth. The Kirkland-based internet provider says around 20,000 Beaverton residents switched over to Ziply Fiber in recent months. Ziply Fiber spokespeople say it's among the first companies to launch ultra-high-speed 5-gig and 2-gig residential fiber internet service. (Light Reading)
