Stay in the loop about everything you need to know about near you with the Beaverton Daily.

Happy Sunday, people of Beaverton! Here's what's happening today around town.
First, today's weather:
A bit of morning rain. High: 57 Low: 41.
Here are the top stories in Beaverton today:
- Mountainside Mavericks are on a roll! Friday marked the team's third straight win, this time against number 10 Sunset in an overtime nail-biter. Mountainside's head coach John Mannion called the win against a program like Sunset "just a huge deal for these kids." Get the details at Pamplin Media Group.
- Cities throughout the state are suffering from a shortage of substitute teachers. Madison Temmel reports that Beaverton lost 215 subs over the pandemic, and Hillsboro lost more than 300. Read about how the State of Oregon has temporarily dropped college degree requirements for substitute teachers to help alleviate the shortage at OregonLive (subscription required).
- Read Kyle Iboshi's investigation of the differences between Portland and other Metro area cities when it comes to addressing illegally parked cars. Many of the cars are associated with people experiencing homelessness, perhaps serving as shelters for these individuals. In contrast to Portland, the city of Beaverton has dedicated 15 safe parking spots divided over five locations to serve those who live in their vehicles. Dr. Vernon Baker, who oversees the parking program in Beaverton, says there's a long waiting list to use the spots. (KGW.com)
- Regional politicians are starting to throw their hats in the race for the new seat representing Congressional District 6. The position was created after Oregon adopted a redistricting plan in late September. Check out Oregon House Representative Andrea Salinas' thoughts on running at Pamplin Media Group.
- Washington County is set to get a few more affordable housing options thanks to Habitat for Humanity. The organization is breaking ground on nearly 50 townhomes, eight of which will be right off TV Highway, about half a mile from Shute Park in Hillsboro. The finished houses will go to families who make between 35 percent and 60 percent of the area's median income. Reps for the nonprofit say they get about ten applicants for every available home.
