Here are the top stories in Beaverton today:
- Some residents of a Washington County neighborhood woke up on July 2 to find 30 American flags missing before the Fourth of July. The aggression towards the neighborhood tradition was caught on surveillance video, which the Washington County Sheriff's Office is reviewing. The neighbors were shocked by the event but vowed to replace the stolen flags with even more flags. (KPTV)
- The Washington County Sheriff's Office is seeking the community's assistance in locating an individual who has been missing for over a year. Ronai "Hazel" Yetisen, 23, was reported missing by his family in June 2022. Authorities say Yetison was last seen May 24, 2021, near Southeast Powell Boulevard and Southeast 42nd Avenue in Portland. Click over to see a photo and read a description of the missing individual. (KATU)
- An important Washington County resource is expanding for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and family abuse. Sally Segar reports on U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici's visit to the Family Justice Center in Beaverton on July 6 to discuss the facility's resources. The Center intends to expand as the Family Peace Center, and is actively seeking funding. For more information, visit fjcwc.org/resources. (Beaverton Valley Times, subscription)
- There's a change to the Washington County Crisis Help Line. If you or someone you know is feeling suicidal, help is just a phone call away. Dial 988 after July 16, 2022, from anywhere in the country to reach trained counselors who are part of the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Network. The previous number, 1-800-273-8255, will continue to work as well. The Washington County Crisis Help Line, (503) 291-9111, will continue to be available to Washington County residents not just for crisis experiences but for anyone struggling with mental health. (City of Hillsboro News)
- Great news for readers: the Beaverton Library is running two reading programs this summer. Kids and teens can earn a new free book by reading, listening and doing family activities like taking a walk, building a pillow fort or making a sidewalk chalk obstacle course. Adults can also participate in summer reading by earning free meals for homeless youth by tracking their reading hours. (Beaverton Library)
Today in Beaverton:
- If your goal is to gain flexibility and strength in a non-competitive environment, you might consider a yoga class at Uptown Dance Studio (14355 SW Pacific Highway in Tigard) at 10:00 A.M. Bring a mat and water if desired. Drop in fee is $12.
- Design and Make Labs at the main branch of the Beaverton Public Library - On Thursdays, this space is open between 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. A library staff member will be on hand to answer questions and assist as needed.
- Aloha Community Farmers Market - Enjoy a midweek market full of artisanal goods, fresh produce and live music every Thursday. (3-7 p.m.)
From my notebook:
- The City of Beaverton puts out a bimonthly newsletter with such valuable information as free lunch sites for kids, how and where to get help in heat events and information about what the City is doing about affordable housing. With a city government as active and engaged as Beaverton's, it's a good idea to check it out. The newsletter is free and can be mailed to you, but it is easy enough to access online.
- If you've ever wondered about the practicality of bike transportation in the city, take a look at this essay about taking a kayak from Tigard to the Tualatin River by bicycle. If that weren't enough, the author is piloting a 6-year-old child in a basket seat at the front of his bike. Our intrepid biker pales only at the thought of stopping at the grocery store on the way home.
You're all caught up with everything I have for you today. Ash DeMello, your regular Patch curator, will return tomorrow with your daily update. Thanks for reading, I'm Merlin Douglass. Make it a wonderful day.
