Officer-Involved Shooting + Tax Evasion + Community Garage Sale

Here are the top five stories in Beaverton today:

  1. The Washington County Major Crimes team is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one person hospitalized. Shots were fired by police and the suspect following a foot chase near Southwest 14th Street and Southwest Alger Avenue Wednesday night. The suspect's injuries are said to be self-inflicted. (KPTV)
  2. The U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Oregon, estimates that one Beaverton resident evaded around $100 million in taxes between January 2014 and February 2018. Francisco Mendez, 27, pled guilty to working with others to pay unlicensed workers under the table. He has agreed to pay restitution in full to the IRS. (KATU)
  3. A Beaverton employer plans to bring about 200 jobs to the City over the next two years, reporter Skip Newberry reveals in an interview with local CEO, Claude Pumilia. The company, DAT Freight & Analytics, specializes in freight and logistics software. (Portland Business Journal)
  4. The City of Beaverton is suing Beaverton Plumbing Inc. and valve maker NIBCO over a defective or improperly installed valve. The fixture failed in late 2019, which the City claims resulted in $316,858.74 in water damage and repairs to City Hall. (Beaverton Valley Times)
  5. Olympic hopeful Shelby Houlihan was given a reprieve from her ban by USA Track and Field (USATF). The organization allowed Houlihan to participate in the U.S. Olympic track and field trials this week as her appeals are processed. USATF banned Houlihan from competition when she tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug, which Houlihan argues came from a burrito she purchased at a food truck near her training headquarters at Nike.
