Happy Thursday, neighbors! Here's everything you need to know about what's happening in Beaverton today.

First, today's weather: Mostly cloudy throughout the day. High: 77 Low: 57.

Here are the top stories in Beaverton today:

  1. Christine Pitawanich reports on how local school districts are altering their plans (or not) in the face of the Delta variant surge. Beaverton City Councilor Nadia Hasan requested a delay in the return to in-person learning for BSD schools, although district spokesperson Shellie Bailey-Shah is pushing forward with full-time in-person learning. (KGW.com)
  2. Did you or your neighbors get some extra time off this week? If you work for local employer Nike, you did! The fashion giant 'powered down' its headquarters this week to give employees a chance to destress and focus on mental health. (Footwear News)
  3. Scary images from an apartment fire on Northwest Gina Way just off 205th Avenue showed up on social media this morning. Firefighters reported to the complex early Wednesday where two people were trapped in the burning building. The individuals were able to escape safely. Officials say the cause was a candle left unattended. (750 KXL)
  4. As kids get ready to return to school, folks are discussing the practicalities of it all. A BSD spokesperson addressed lunchtime, saying that students will, for the most part, eat in the lunchroom and maintain physical distancing. Some schools may have students eat outdoors, space permitting. (OregonLive)
  5. Open Air Beaverton allowed many downtown businesses to expand outdoors and flourish through the pandemic. The Beaverton Downtown Association reports on the community's response to upcoming changes to regulations proposed by City Council earlier this month. Although businesses responded favorably overall to the outdoor dining provisions, concerns included safety for pedestrians, ADA accessibility issues and questions about permitting fees. The new, permanent Open Air Beaverton Permit Program goes live October 12. (Downtown Beaverton Association)
