Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:

  1. Are you an awesome STEM educator, or do you happen to know one? If so, you might be interested to know that the application period for the 2022 Vernier/NSTA Technology Awards has opened! The grant, in its 19th year, is a collaboration between Beaverton's Vernier Software & Technology and the National Science Teaching Association to recognize seven educators for data collection innovations in the classroom. The winning educators will each receive $5,500 in prizes. (Yahoo Finance)
  2. The City of Beaverton wants your feedback on its new website! Head over to BeavertonOregon.gov to take a brief survey on what you would like to see from one of the municipality's primary resources for connecting with the community. The redesign should be up and operating sometime in 2022. (Press Release Desk)
  3. Find out what Cedar Mill and Bethany libraries are doing with their ARPA funds in the org's latest newsletter. Some of the funded projects include community kits with large print editions to better serve residential senior communities; a library mailer that focuses on extending inclusive and equitable services to underserved populations; and a kindergarten orientation book distribution to local elementary schools. The libraries are also already offering mini-libraries in low-income housing complexes like the Cedar Grove Apartments. (CMBCL Newsletter)
  4. PCC Rock Creek staff and students are helping create a college pathway for the children of migrant farm workers. The school's College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) is a 45-person, federally-funded cohort that offers classes to prep students for four-year universities as well as get them acclimated to campus life and navigating the complex processes of applications, seeking funding and more. Find out more at the Press Release Desk.
  5. Dillon Mullan reports that Washington County is adding shelter units in preparation for winter. To meet the growing demand, hotels in Hillsboro, Forest Grove and Aloha have been converted to serve those experiencing homelessness, for a total of 187 units in the county. One county staff member says that converting motels is the county's likeliest strategy to increase capacity without the ability to fund new, dedicated construction. (KOIN)
