🌱Police Still Seeking Car Arsonist + Historic Hillsboro Tour

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Beaverton.

(Patch Media)

Hey Beaverton, good morning. I snuck back in because, well, it's hard to say goodbye. And there are plenty of things to know about for this Wednesday so let's get started.

First the weather:

Still a chance of rain in the forecast. High: 48 Low: 30

Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:

  1. Neighbors are campaigning for safer streets and designated crossings on Hall Boulevard after a Tigard woman was killed crossing Hall Boulevard with her mom Friday night. Karen Kain (57) was likely walking her mother (86) home to the care center where she lives at the time they were struck. Kain was killed and her mother suffered serious injuries. Neighbors say that better lights and designated crossing places will help prevent future tragedies. (KATU)
  2. METRO took to Twitter today to talk about their progress in affordable housing for the region. In particular they highlighted the 800 homes under construction now in Forest Grove. The construction was approved by voters in 2018. (Twitter)
  3. While not specifically a Beaverton story, the fact that 150,000 fentanyl laced pills were seized in Clackamas County March 1 and then two unrelated deaths of high school students were reported within 24 hours a few days later, it behooves parents and teens to know what the pills being circulated look like. This report from KOIN contains photos that might help you identify these very dangerous drugs on the street right now. This is not strictly a local problem. The government of Saskatchewan in Canada is circulating this fentanyl fact sheet you might want to take a look at. (Twitter)
  4. The City of Beaverton has announced that grants are available citywide to help business owners to create outdoor service areas. These grants can be used to convert on-street parking or private parking lots. The grants will pay 100% of the costs to consult a city-contracted architect. After the plans have been approved, separate grants can be used for up to 70% construction costs, not to exceed $15,000. The city has established a hotline to answer questions and provide assistance. (City of Beaverton)
  5. New information is emerging from the car fire in the parking lot of the Fred Meyer earlier this week. Authorities are still looking for the suspect but video shows this person lighting the fire, the explosion that follows and the suspect themselves catching on fire. It is still unknown whether the arson was a targeted activity or a random attack. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Washington County Sheriff's department. (KOIN)

Today in Beaverton:

  • Take a narrated historic walking tour of Hillsboro from 10 a.m. to noon. The walk is approximately one mile and the walk will take an easy pace. Walkers will meet at the Hillsboro Civic Center, 150 E. Main St. The cost of the tour is $20 and must be paid in advance.
  • Parents with toddlers are invited to Toddler Storytime at the main Beaverton library today. Story time runs from 10:15 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. in meeting room B.

From my notebook:

  • A gentleman by the name of Joe Pompliano took to Twitter to give his list of 50 of the world's most beautiful sports venues. His pick for #16 is the Michael Johnson Track at Nike World Headquarters right here in Beaverton. To take a look here to see this site and scroll up and down to look at his other selections.
  • The Beaverton Library is organizing a Northwest Author event later this year. If you are a writer in the tri-county area and you'd like to promote your work, you will want to contact them prior to March 12, the last day for author applications to be accepted. Applications can be obtained here.
  • If you have an interest in low-cost community health care and you have some time to volunteer, the NHC Beaverton Medical Clinic would love to talk to you. The clinic, located at 17200 NW Corridor Ct., Suite 110 in Beaverton. They provide acute and preventative care for patients who don't have insurance or who find themselves in financial difficulties.
