🌱Protests At North Plains Golf Tournament + Possible Fireworks Ban

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Beaverton.

(Patch Media)

Welcome to July, Beavertonians! I'm here in your inbox this morning to get you caught up on everything you need to know about what's going on around town. Here it goes...

First, today's weather:

Times of clouds and sun. High: 80 Low: 54.

Here are the top five stories in Beaverton today:

  1. Fireworks are traditional this time of year, but the Washington County government is considering an emergency ban due to fire risk. The agency also notes that fireworks that fly in the air and explode are already banned. Report illegal fireworks to the county's non-emergency dispatch at 503-629-0111. (Press Release Desk)
  2. The Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf tournament is live and protestors descended on North Plains in Washington County beginning Thursday to show their dismay. Survivors and families of victims of the Sept. 11 attacks made up the majority of the group who gathered at a park near the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club, where the event is being held. They're unhappy with the Saudi government's connections to the attacks. (KATU)
  3. More affordable housing is on its way! Mayor Beaty was on hand to break ground for the South Cooper Mountain project on June 29, which is set to bring 164 units to the neighborhood. Planners estimate the complex will house around 300 residents. Next in the affordable housing queue is a residence for seniors to be built across from the Beaverton City Library in downtown. (Beaverton Valley Times)
  4. Get your July plans down with help from reporter Mark Miller. One highlight is Bethany Village's summer concert series kicks off on July 7 with Steve Hale & The Super Soul Heroes (arrive early, parking is nuts). There's also a presentation from Chamber Music Northwest entitled "Colors of Debussy & Crumb," set to showcase French Impressionism and Black American spirituals on July 14. La Strada dei Pastelli has been relocated to downtown Hillsboro this year, but that's okay — the captivating chalk art festival is just a short drive away on July 17. So many good things are coming this summer, just click over to the article for tons of ways to fill that calendar! (Portland Tribune)
  5. Writer Jamuna Chiarini offers a roundup of dance events to look forward to in July. Among the list is Ten Tiny Dances, scheduled to hit Beaverton City Park on July 9. The event, which was originated by Portland dance artist Mark Barber in 2002, offers choreographers to explore the possibilities of a very small, 4-foot by 4-foot stage. Dancers' ingenuity with the confines of the task over the years has made Ten Tiny Dances a "staple of Oregon's dance scene." (Oregon ArtsWatch)

Are you a Beaverton resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)

To learn more, visit Masterworks.io, where Beaverton Daily readers can skip the waitlist.
