Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:

  1. Cyclists can look forward to new pathways to explore in the near future. The SW Trails organization broke ground on a family-friendly bicycle and pedestrian trail along the old Red Electric railroad route to connect Beaverton and the South Waterfront.   2. The Oregonian's Samantha Swindler exercised her Good Samaritan muscles in recent days, helping connect three class rings with their owners, including one Beaverton High School alum. The rings were discovered in a variety of locations, and the locals who found them kept them safe, sometimes for decades.   3. A Beaverton company has met a major milestone in revolutionizing the recycling of plastic packaging, according to a press release from Tuesday. Digimarc Corporation, a software company that has headquarters near Washington Square Mall, announced it has entered semi-industrial trials in its development of intelligent waste sorting. The project is powered by the Alliance to End Plastic Waste. (Yahoo Finance)
  4. Violence in the Metro area made national news thanks to two separate driving-related disputes. The AP reported on the incident on Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway where two armed men exchanged gunfire, ending in the death of one, as well as a stabbing over a parking space in Gresham. Both attacks occurred Friday afternoon. (Associated Press)
  5. U.S. Representative Suzanne Bonamici and U.S. Senator Ron Wyden spent some time in Oak Hills on Monday. The pair visited the crew at the local TVF&D station "as way to say thank you to all of our first responders," Bonamici explained. She also talked about congressional efforts to improve safety for firefighters. Wyden disclosed changes to the upcoming federal budget to mitigate the burden individual states face due to the large-scale fires that have become all too common in our region. (Pamplin Media Group)
