Road Construction Update+Magnet Academy Dedication+Rent Mediation

Welcome to the Beaverton Daily— your go-to for the lowdown on all things Beaverton.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, neighbors! It's me again, Ash DeMello, ready to welcome you to a new week with the latest Beaverton Daily.

First, today's weather: Partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 73 Low: 52.

Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:

1. Being forewarned is being forearmed in many things, including traffic. So here's a list of Washington County road projects that are starting next week:

  • 170th Avenue, between Merlo Road and Augusta Lane;
  • 185th Avenue, between Farmington Road and Madeline Street;
  • Cornell Road and Arrington Road intersection (Monday is the final day);
  • Pongratz Road, between Tolke and Pihl roads; and
  • Roshak Road, between Snapdragon Lane and Barrows Road.

Consider alternative routes to avoid delays! (Washington County LUT)

2. Local officials, staff and students gathered to dedicate the new Arts and Communication Magnet Academy (ACMA) building over the weekend. Cool features include the incorporation of huge wood beams from ACMA's former building, reclaimed wainscoting, a central performance stage and a reproduction of the school's original logo. The Beaverton School District school near the Beaverton Town Square shopping center serves about 750 high school and middle schoolers. (ACMA)

3. Restrictions have loosened, and it's time to hit some entertainment, amiright? Not so much if you're not vaccinated. A large number of local entertainment venues are requiring proof of vaccination on entry. Among the Westside venues adopting this requirement are Hillsboro's Bag and Baggage Theatre Group and Lake Oswego's Lakeside Theater. (OregonLive; subscription required)

4. Read about the Hillsboro Hop's victory over the Vancouver Canadians on Saturday over at MILB.com. Tristan English sparkled with two of the team's four long balls, and he and teammate Blaze Alexander made Hops history with the team's first back-to-back homers since 2018. It was also only the third time the team has scored four home runs in one game in its history. Head to Ron Tonkin Stadium on September 3 and 4 to celebrate the end of the season with fireworks.

5. Time to celebrate! A woman who experienced homelessness for years just moved into a new apartment with help from Washington County and the non-profit Project Homeless Connect (PHC). Tamara Will connected with PHC's Safe Sleep Village, where people like her are able to find support, get connected with services and benefit from a safe place to think and try to get on track for a permanent housing solution. Though Will doesn't have much furniture in her new place yet, having her own space is "like winning the lottery."(KATU)
