Happy Wednesday, people of Beaverton! Here's everything you need to know to get this day started.

First, today's weather:

Cloudy with a touch of rain. High: 57 Low: 53.

Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:

  1. The principle of supply and demand is being realized in the Beaverton School District as desperation for substitute teachers has motivated the org to raise pay rates. The previously daily rate was $195; now it's $230. "That's an increase of 18% so we're serious," BSD spokesperson Shellie Bailey-Shah remarked. In addition to the increase in pay, new subs who sign on are eligible for a cash bonus, contrary to what was previously reported. Read more about the district's efforts to fill these positions at KOIN.com.
  2. A 49-unit apartment building on Hall Boulevard near Allen is slated for an upgrade. WebWire reports that Westland Investors acquired the Fairwood Apartments with plans to remodel and rebrand it as "Vose." Westland Investors reps say they'll work closely with the current tenants on how to prioritize renovations.
  3. A Hillsboro Hops alum is headed to the 2021 World Series. Dansby Swanson, who played for the Hops in their title-winning 2015 season, will be starting shortstop for the Atlanta Braves at the MLB national championship games. Swanson is the first former Hops player to play in the World Series. (Pamplin Media Group: paid subscription or free WCCLS cardholder access)
  4. Learn how a former Westview High School student was able to go to college thanks to an Oregon Promise Grant over at the Press Release Desk. Many federal and state financial aid options were unavailable to Tamir Yizhaki because of his immigration status. After reaching out to PCC Financial Aid Coordinator Rachael Smith, Yizhaki was able to navigate the complicated school financing landscape and get the funds he needed to enroll.
  5. Want more drama in your life? Consider hitting up the next school board meeting. Ashley Koch reports on how school board meetings are becoming heated and even violent in places like Beaverton. The National School Boards Association has taken notice, issuing a statement last month that equated some of the actions to "domestic terrorism." See how different groups are reacting to the comparison and get the full story at KGW.com.
