School District, Latino Network To Host Know Your Rights Workshop

The Beaverton School District and Latino Network will host Adelante Juntos: Healing Through Dialogue and Standing Together on June 17.

BEAVERTON, OR — Working in partnership with the Latino Network, the Beaverton School District will host a "Know Your Rights" workshop, Adelante Juntos: Healing Through Dialogue and Standing Together, next weekend in the cafeteria at Beaverton High School.

From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at BHS, 13000 S.W. Second St., school district officials will join representatives of the Latino Network — a community-led resource and education provider for local Latino residents — to conduct a dialogue about knowing and understanding U.S. constitutional rights.

"Post-election, there has been fear and anxiety within the community, and we wanted to provide information so (Latino and immigrant residents) know and understand their rights," said Maureen Wheeler, spokeswoman for the Beaverton School District. "There's room for improvement for all of us to better understand our rights."

While the event is geared toward non-English speaking residents — the meeting will be conducted in Spanish — there will be English language interpreters on hand, Wheeler said. Childcare and refreshments will also be available.

The event, she said, is "about knowing your rights, finding our strength, and being prepared in this post-election era as Latinos and immigrant communities."
