🌱Season's Final Farmers Market + Local Man Seeks Archery Record

Find out the most important things happening today in Beaverton in five minutes or less!

(Patch Media)

Morning, neighbors! Ash DeMello here with a brand-new copy of the Beaverton Daily. There are lots of interesting items in today's edition, from an obsessed archer to a hopeful analysis of the area's education labor force. Today is also your very last chance of the season to visit the Beaverton Farmers Market.

First, today's weather:

Clouds giving way to sun. High: 51 Low: 34.

Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:

  1. Take a look at Ki Coffee's expansion into artsy retail downtown over at KPTV.com. Little Little Art Co. opened up earlier this month on Watson and 1st, featuring 90-plus artisans. Hear the owners discuss the importance of buying small in an interview with Ayo Elise. Look forward to markets throughout the season to discover more cool items from local artisans.
  2. Someone ranked every Portland-area Trader Joe's and our area came up looking awesome! A trio of writers and self-proclaimed grocery chain aficionados over at Portland Monthly keyed in on what makes each store different to distinguish the best iterations from the rest. Ranking in at number one is the Tanasbourne location on 185th Avenue, followed by Oregon's 'OG' TJ's (that is, the state's first Trader Joe's location) on Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway. The area's newest market in Garden Home came in third.
  3. Beaverton School District recently raised its pay rates for substitute teachers in an effort to address a shortage that's being felt nationwide. Read Liza Morehead's take at the Portland Business Journal, where she finds that the Metro area's education labor force is slowly recovering. Morehead says that an interruption in the education pipeline disrupted the job force, but that's being resolved. Likewise, many folks may have been avoiding the sector because kids under 12 weren't able to be vaccinated, a problem that has also recently resolved.
  4. Beaverton parents and district officials respond to Oregon's new 'test-to-stay' policies for students. The new program will allow students to test negative for COVID to avoid quarantine after virus exposure. One parent said she would voluntarily keep an exposed child home, even if he did test negative: "I feel that's the responsible thing to do." Beaverton School District officials comment that there's no implementation date set for the new policy and that, currently, less than 1 percent of students are home from school because of COVID. 5. Smithsonian Magazine follows a local man who has set out to shoot an arrow farther than ever before. Alan Case, an engineer and designer from Beaverton, has spent the past 15 years attempting to reach his goal of launching an arrow over 2,028 yards. Click the link to see Case's Beaverton workshop and learn more about the challenging effort that has driven him and his colleagues for over a decade.

  • Here's something that's been on my mind: IMHO, Beaverton and its residents have too few nicknames. Someone recently made me aware of "Beaver-tron," but that's one of the few I've heard of and it's not widely used. Anybody got thoughts on this? If so, ping me at the e-mail address below.
