State Plans to Inspect Hundreds of Companies that Emit Toxic Metals

The State of Oregon has released a list of 316 companies that emit toxic heavy metals into the air at unknown levels.

The Department of Environmental Quality says they plan to inspect them all and collect data from each.

The first 100 or so inspections will begin in June and, according to DEQ, "will be prioritized based on reported data and facilities' proximity to residences, schools, hospitals and other facilities."

The inspections will take place at companies large and small and in every part of the state - from Bullseye Glass in Portland to Beaverton Auto Body and Part to Ammcon Corporation in Hillsboro to Dan Enterprises in Oregon City.

The need to identify metal-emitting companies became clear in February when DEQ was forced to disclose that elevated levels of toxic metals such as hexavalent chromium, arsenic, and cadmium had been discovered near two Portland glass manufacturing companies.

In a letter to Governor Kate Brown, DEQ says the inspections will be "surprise" but will be preceded by letters asking for information.

In determining the order the facilities will be inspected, the state will also take into consideration the proximity to places like homes, schools, daycare facilities, long-term health care facilities, and correctional facilities.

State officials determined that the best that they could determine was a list of companies that could emit toxic metals.

So, they will eventually send inspectors to all the facilities on the list.
