The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Beaverton.

Helloooo Beaverton. Finally, a day without the crime and injury stories we've been getting daily for months. Today we have a chance to talk about some of the things we like best about our town. Watch Mayor Lacey Beaty raising the Pride flag for June, look at cute pets looking for a home and find out about a reading program for adults that will earn free meals for homeless kids. I'm Merlin Douglass, and let's get started.
First, today's weather:
Considerable cloudiness. High: 80 Low: 56.

Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:
- There's a sad story from Forest Grove today. Suzanne Tanous is suing the Caring Places Memory Care Center because her husband, Tom Tanous, went missing from there last year. When Tanous, a patient with severe dementia, walked away from the care center, a huge search was launched using dogs, drones and volunteers. Ultimately, though, that search was unsuccessful. Tom Tanous was found two days later, deceased in Gales Creek, downstream of the Tualatin Valley Highway bridge. (OregonLive)
- See Mayor Lacey Beaty raise the Pride flag at City Hall today in recognition of Pride Month. Hear the Mayor's comments at the city's official Facebook page.
- Summer reading programs are not just for kids. Adults can participate in a program that racks up free meals for homeless youth through HomePlate Youth Services. For every 750 hours of collective registered reading hours, the New Friends of the Beaverton City Library will donate a week's worth of hot meals for a homeless youth. The program will run from June 1 through August 15, so if you're a regular reader, sign up now to do the most possible good. (Beaverton Library)
- Lots of dogs and cats would appreciate having their very own families. Our area has a variety of pet adoption facilities that have many animals looking for their fur-ever home. You can also foster homeless animals until someone comes along who wants to give them a home. (Patch)
- A new small-scale Target is taking over the space at the former Bales Market in Cedar Mill. The store plans to sell groceries, general merchandise and alcohol. It will also include a pharmacy and a Starbucks. An opening date has not been announced yet. (Beaverton Valley Times; this story is available without subscription)
Today in Beaverton:
- Get fit and improve your Latin dance steps at the same time. Uptown Dance studio in Tigard is presenting Latin HIIT from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The cost is $10 to drop in or $50 for unlimited dance classes each month.
- Spare yourself the crowds at the weekend and go to the Farmers Market today in Aloha from 3 to 7 p.m. See what approximately 30 vendors have to offer. They are also looking for volunteers to help the market run smoothly.
- Get out of the house and play trivia at Ringos on Broadway in downtown Beaverton from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. There will be prizes and special prices on pitchers. This event happens every Thursday.
From my notebook:
- The Patricia Reser Center for the Arts is developing a membership program beginning at $100 to encourage regular attendance at Beaverton's latest cultural flowering. And if you're not quite ready to step up to the membership level, there are a number of different discounts you might be eligible for. These include students, seniors, low income, military and first responders discounts.
- This weekend, take that broken hairdryer, radio, bicycle or necklace to the Repair Fair at the Beaverton Library (main location) on Saturday, June 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There are a few rules like the item must be clean, not gas-powered or otherwise smelly. It's a great idea to sign up ahead of time here so that volunteers with the right skills will be available.
That's all I have for you today but come on back tomorrow. Ash DeMello will be here with all the latest. Meanwhile, have a fantastic Thursday and see you again soon. —Merlin Douglass
