Here are the top five stories today in Beaverton:

  1. Providence St. Vincent nurses have voted to authorize a strike. The Oregon Nurses Association announced the decision Wednesday, May 4. The union must give the hospital ten days of notice before actually going on strike. The 1,600 nurses' votes were in response to what they call "illegal unfair labor practices" on the part of Providence. (Beaverton Patch)
  2. A Sunset High School student has started a non-profit organization to help first-generation immigrants deal with stress and mental health. Aaron Li's Project Lotus seeks to assist minority groups such as the 25% of Asian Americans who he says experience mental health distress on a daily basis. Li's efforts were recently recognized with one of 25 national Prudential Emerging Visionary Awards. (KOIN.com)
  3. An Oregon group hosted the opening session of a webinar on fentanyl on Wednesday, hoping to educate families about the incredibly dangerous drug. The Vibrant Future Coalition hosted the first session in the series, which featured Beaverton parents Jennifer and Jon Epstein. The couple lost their son, Cal, to a fentanyl overdose in 2020. They spoke on the importance of parental involvement, especially because they say the current curriculum on the topic in schools is outdated. (Fox 12 Oregon)
  4. Bethany Village will host its annual Spring Market on May 16, reports Sally Segar. The event will feature live jazz music, 20+ vendors and activities for kids! Bethany Village Centre is located at the intersection of Northwest Bethany Boulevard and Laidlaw. (Beaverton Valley Times, subscription required)
  5. Check out a roundup of Westside events from reporter Mark Miller over at the Portland Tribune (subscription required). May promises nine separate art exhibits in the area, including conversations with artists Analee Fuentes and Richard Rowland at The Patricia Reser Center for the Arts on May 14. There are lots of opportunities to hear live music as well. For instance, the Beaverton City Library will host a pop-up concert by Tango Trios on Wednesday, May 18.
