🌱Tanasbourne Crash Kills One + $5M Funds For Beaverton Schools' Staff

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Beaverton.

(Patch Media)

Welcome to Monday! Ash DeMello here with your "what happened over the weekend" edition of the Beaverton Daily, filled with all the things you need to know about what's happening locally. Here goes...

First, today's weather:

Times of clouds and sun. High: 77 Low: 56.

Here are the top stories in Beaverton today:

  1. The Fourth of July holiday is bringing multiple parades to our area today. Even if you're not planning on attending, here are some parade-related road closures to help you plan your routes and avoid delays as you go about your day (wc-roads.com). Links lead to parade route maps, unless otherwise listed:
  2. A fiery motor vehicle accident in the Tanasbourne area killed one individual early Sunday morning. Hillsboro police arrived on the scene near the corner of Northwest Tanasbourne Drive and Northeast Stucki Avenue around 4:30 a.m. to find a car had flipped and was engulfed in flames. Emergency personnel were able to extract an individual who was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Another was pronounced dead at the scene. (KOIN.com)
  3. Last year's scramble to hire and retain teachers throughout the state led Oregon politicians to pass House Bill 4030, which gave $78 million to school districts' staffing efforts. Beaverton School District received $5 million of those funds. A district exec said some of the money will go towards training for substitute teachers. Another chunk will be directed to "targeted pay adjustments" for nutrition service and transportation workers. (Oregon Public Broadcasting)
  4. Rising interest rates are making mortgages too expensive for many Oregonians, reports Jayati Ramakrishnan. One family saw the amount of home they could afford drop $50,000 due to an increased interest rate, making it even more difficult to buy a home in the Metro area's spicy market. With a lack of affordable options, Beaverton resident Chris Guthrie found himself on the hunt for a year and a half, finally settling on a townhome in need of repairs. (OregonLive, subscription)
  5. OregonLive's Jeff Manning checked in with Beaverton-based runner Shelby Houlihan, who was banned from competing last year by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Houlihan, a former member of the elite Bowerman Track Club, now works delivering meals — a big change from the six figures she said she was making as a professional athlete. But Houlihan doesn't really have a backup plan, and continues her training in Lake Oswego. The American record-holder in the women's 1,500 and 5,000 meters maintains her innocence and vows to return to the sport.
