First, today's weather:

Clear throughout the day. High: 82 Low: 56.

Here are the top stories in Beaverton today:

  1. Some folks' commutes are soon to get more convenient. TriMet officially announced a MAX Red Line extension slated to reach downtown Hillsboro, with 10 additional stops after the Beaverton Transit Center. A project director with TriMet said that the enhancement is in response to Beaverton and Hillsboro residents' requests for more service in the area. Construction will begin this fall, with operations scheduled to begin in 2024. (Pamplin Media Group)
  2. A mainstay of the regional tech industry has died. William Walker, formerly the chief operating officer of Tektronix, passed away in Beaverton earlier this month at the age of 90. Walker also served as CEO of Electro Scientific Industries and Planar Systems, both Washington County companies. (OregonLive)
  3. KOIN's Kohr Explores segment traveled to Beaverton for waffles on Monday. The reporter interviewed David Fernandez, the manager at Smaaken Waffles at the Rose Biggi food pod, about the cart's savory and sweet creations. Highlights include locally sourced produce, house-infused maple butter and even options for vegans. Fernandez says the cart sells 100 to 120 waffles every day, with minimal slowdown through the pandemic thanks to their to-go model. (KOIN)
  4. Unemployment rates continue to improve in Washington County, demonstrated by July's numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The region's unemployment rate was 4.1 percent in July, which was an 0.3 percent improvement over June. Washington County numbers are better than the state's average, which rang in at 4.8 percent for July. (Patch)
  5. It's one of my favorite parts of the week: the Patch roundup of local pets available for adoption. This week includes four-month-old bonded sibling kittens, Sasha and Pinky, Buddy, a young male domestic shorthair with 'maternal' instincts and a superkitten named Hashbrown. Click over yourself to see if you can resist all the fuzziness and puppy dog eyes. (Patch)
