TVF&R Welcomes First Woman Captain + Where To Get Your Booster
Welcome to the Beaverton Daily, your go-to for updates on all things Beaverton.

Hey, neighbors! It's me again, Ash DeMello, your host of the Beaverton Daily.
First, today's weather:
Light rain in the afternoon and evening. High: 64 Low: 48.
Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:
- Karen Bureker is challenging stereotypes she once held — that firefighters are big, burly, muscular men. Bureker has worked as a firefighter with TVF&R for nearly twenty years, and this month, she was appointed the agency's first woman fire captain. Although she has an athletic background, Bureker says the job calls for more than physical strength and size. Emotional intelligence and empathy are also keys. Read more about her story at Pamplin Media Group.
- If you've driven past the West End District site, you may have noticed some new signage for an incoming tenant— Caspian Kabob. The beloved Persian food cart in Portland closed in December 2019, and it's slated to reopen as a brick-and-mortar here in Beaverton's latest mixed-use development. Owners Victor and Tracy Darchini hope to be up and running by January 2022. (Pamplin Media Group)
- Are you planning on taking classes at Portland Community College sometime soon? Click over to read about the school's 'Sustained Reopening' phase. The article additionally details vaccination clinics at the Willow Creek location and Rock Creek Campus's Choral and Vocal Studies Program efforts to keep students safe. You'll also find handy links to help answer questions surrounding the PCC community's return to campus. (Press Release Desk)
- More news on one of the latest entries in the race for governor: Colin Miner reports that Beaverton's Tobias Read, currently the state treasurer, wants the promotion, but he's got quite a lot of competition. Other potential contenders include House Speaker Tina Kotek, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Nicholas Kristof, Sandy Mayor Stan Pulliam and more. (Beaverton Patch)
- Are you over 65? Immunocompromised? A frontline worker? Check out the list from Portland Monthly on where you can find a COVID-19 booster shot. The article lists three different options right here in Beaverton.
