Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:
- Are you a planner? Check out the predictions from the 29th Annual Winter Weather Forecast Conference of the Oregon Chapter of the American Meteorology Society over at Pamplin Media Group (click here if you're a paid subscriber; click over here if you have free access via your WCCLS card). Experts say that we might expect a cooler and wetter than average winter. Other experts predict less precipitation than we had last year. But here's something everyone can agree on: there should be plenty of snow in the Cascades for your skiing, sledding and snowboarding enjoyment.
- Whatever happens this winter, Washington County is prepared. The agency's Land Use & Transportation department reports they recently acquired three new, larger storage tanks to hold anti-icing agent. Keith Lewis, Operations Superintendent, reports that the county has enough product on hand for four applications — more than they've typically had when heading into the winter season. (LUT News)
- Click over to Pamplin Media Group (click here if you're a paid subscriber; click over here if you have free access via your WCCLS card) to learn about the prospective statewide growth for the manufacturing sector from state employment economist Gail Krumenauer. The article reveals a significant amount of growth in transportation equipment manufacturing is projected to add 2,500 jobs from 2020 to 2030. Krumenauer says that other types of manufacturing that seem to have expanded despite the pandemic were sawmills, other wood product manufacturing and semiconductor manufacturing (Washington County's purview).
- The summer heat was a challenge for most of us, but for one Beaverton tree grower, it meant a significant loss of income. Vanessa and Tom Bunker, who own Beaverton Holiday U-Cut Tree Farm, report that they lost 60 percent due to excessive heat. The Bunkers also note that the dryer seasons have caused trees to grow slower. Read more about the predicament at KOMO News.
- Sherwood police had an unexpected task on Saturday morning: find the owners of a lost horse. Sam Campbell reports that officers responded to a report of a wandering horse around 5:24 AM near the corner of Southwest Ladd Hill and Brookman Roads. Officers managed to capture the animal and lead it to a nearby pasture before locating the owner a few hours later. (KOIN)
