🌱WashCo Non-Profits Help Ukraine + 2 Local Men Missing

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Beaverton.

(Patch Media)

Good morning Beaverton. Today is Thursday and there's lots going on today. Glad you're here. I'm Merlin Douglass, your temporary Patch curator, and let's get started.

First, today's weather:

The atmospheric river has run its course. It's cold and cloudy today. High: 51 Low: 38

Here are the top stories in Beaverton today:

  1. It's finally happening. The Patricia Reser Center had its grand opening. Pictures of the current Mayor and the former Mayor cutting the ribbon March 1 are available via Twitter. Here is the calendar of upcoming shows and events.
  2. The Washington County Sheriff's office is looking for two missing men in unrelated cases. The first man is Thomas Geiger, aged 46. The second man, Ronald Engesether, aged 87, is also missing. Read about him here. Authorities would appreciate any help you can provide. (Twitter)
  3. Jesuit High School has its first Rose Festival princess, Jenny Duan. She was selected to represent Metro West in the Rose Festival Court. (OregonLive)
  4. Washington County non-profits are mobilizing to help Ukraine. Groups such as the Beaverton based Ukrainian-American Cultural Association of Oregon and Southwest Washington and Tigard based Medical Teams International are raising money and trying to figure out how they can help Ukrainian citizens. (Pamplin Media Groups; click here for free access via your WCCFLS login or click here if you have a paid subscription.)
  5. The City of Beaverton's arts grants are no longer going to be available for application after the March 25 deadline. So if you've been thinking about applying, the time to do it is now. The grants provide up to $5,000 for an individual project. (Beaverton Arts Grants)

  • There are story groups for two age groups today in person at the Beaverton Central Library. The first story time for preschool kids 3 - 6 years is at 10:15 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. The second story time is for toddlers ages 2 - 3 and runs from 11:15 a.m.. - 11:40 a.m.
  • I can't believe I didn't know this existed. The Tigard library will check out craft kits to kids, teens and adults. Just stop by and ask a librarian for a craft bag with supplies and simple instructions. The only limit is one craft checked out per person every two weeks.

From my notebook:

  • Hillsboro Fire and Rescue reminds us to test our smoke alarms. Test it before you need it. They recommend smoke alarms over 10 years old be replaced.
  • The Elsie Stuhr Center is open once again serving 55 year olds and better. It is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. - 2 pm. At this time activities are limited to the weight/cardio room, coffee bar, fitness classes and rentals. It is on bus lines #76 and #78, located at 5550 SW Hall Boulevard.
  • The homeless shelter for kids, Safe Place, in Hillsboro offers a 24/7 drop-in program where youth can access essential services while looking for longer term housing. It offers services for youth 12 through 20. It is right off the Max line at 454 SE Washington St. If you or someone you know in the right age group needs these services, self-referrals and walk-ins are welcome.
