🌱WashCo's New Mental Health Pilot Program + Bake For Ukraine

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Beaverton.

(Patch Media)

Morning, Beaverton! It's Friday, so let's get you started with everything you need to know going on today in town.

First, today's weather:

Sunshine and patchy clouds. High: 58 Low: 32.

Here are the top five stories today in Beaverton:

  1. A Beaverton resident appeared on 'Jeopardy!' Thursday night, reports Sally Segar. Karson Leperi, a local engineer, showcased his knowledge on the March 10 episode. Leperi made a good showing, going into Final Jeopardy in the lead, but his lack of Lizzie Borden knowledge seems to have cost him the game. (Portland Tribune: Click here for free access via a WCCLS login; click here if you have a paid subscription)
  2. Washington County launched a new Mental Health Diversion Pilot Program. It's designed to give qualifying non-violent offenders the possibility of having their criminal charges dismissed if they comply with certain requirements, which may include enrollment in mental health treatment. The pilot program is a collaboration between the court, the DA's Office, the sheriff's office, Washington County Adult and Mental Health Services and other local agencies and professionals. (Washing County District Attorney)
  3. There are lots of occasions coming up for which pie would be appropriate, not the least of which (in my opinion) is Pi Day — March 14. Check out what's available locally in that delicious genre at the Beaverton Farmers Market Newsletter. The newsletter also highlights Bake for Ukraine efforts by some vendors, who will donate a percentage of Saturday's profits to the war-stricken country.
  4. Learn about one of the area's important wetland habitats from Susan Mates of the Cedar Mill News. The Cedar Mill Wetlands take up 16 acres along Barnes Road and were restored in 1997 after being drained to serve as a horse pasture and farmland. Today, the space is owned by The Wetland Conservancy and serves as home to beaver, newts, deer, reptiles and more than 100 species of birds. Incoming spring might just afford you the opportunity to explore the trail that meanders through the northwest portion of the wetlands, with access points from SW Barnes Road or from NW Cedar Falls Drive.
  5. Prepare for the weekend ahead with the weather forecast for the Beaverton area from the Beaverton Patch. Expect rain Saturday and Sunday, with wind gusts up to 28 mph.
