🌱Water Bill Relief From WashCo + Cooling Center Opens At Main Library

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Beaverton.

(Patch Media)

Hey, Beaverton. I'm here in your inbox this morning to get you caught up on everything you need to know about what's going on around town.

First, today's weather:

Plenty of sunshine. High: 82 Low: 58.

Here are the top five stories in Beaverton today:

  1. Weather experts say a heat wave is headed our way, set to impact Western Oregon this weekend. To help locals cope, the Beaverton City Library is opening its doors extra hours: The Cathy Stanton Room at the Main location will serve as a cooling center from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. (Beaverton Valley Times)
  2. Washington County residents who have balances on their water bills because of hardships caused by COVID-19 may catch a break. On June 22, the county announced that it's allocating $2 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds to help qualifying low-income families clear their past-due bills. 3. Beaverton-HQ'd Nike announced it will fully exit Russia. The announcement came Thursday following about three months of suspending online sales and operations at Nike-owned-and-operated stores in the country in response to Russia's military aggression in Ukraine. Nike leadership said the exit will take place responsibly over the coming months. (Beaverton Patch)
  4. See what's going on at City Hall with the latest edition of Your Beaverton. Tuesday's City Council meeting saw a new councilor enter (Edward Kimmi) and another announce his resignation (Marc San Soucie, exiting due to term limits). Beaverton Night Market is coming back on July 23. And you can help shape the city government's decisions by filling out the Vision Survey.
  5. This weekend also boasts the return of the Tigard Festival of Balloons. Get a preview of the event in the Andy's Adventures Segment on Fox 12 Oregon. Watch the local television personality light the burners for one of the balloons and sail off into the sky in the engine-free contraption.

From our sponsor:

Are you a Beaverton resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)

  • A local spot drew praise in the "Where to Drink This Week" column of Willamette Week. Flora, the speakeasy-style bar on the top floor of Loyal Legion in Downtown Beaverton, was given a shoutout for its "swanky setting" and "eclectic, plant-based drink menu that's as playful as it is colorful." Check out those fancy garnishes (smoking cinnamon stick anyone?) via my recent visit. Or view the mixologists' latest creation here.
