Members of my family recently discovered two pieces of World War II V-mail addressed to Lewis Kirk, Box 1184, Myrtle Point, OR. The letters were discovered, and purchased, while clearing a house in Coquille in preparation for remodeling.

The letters were sent in August 1944 and February 1945 by William Eugene Kirk, a U.S. Navy sailor deployed overseas.

These two opened letters were sent using V-mail, short for Victory Mail, which was a hybrid mail process the United States used as the primary and secure method to correspond with soldiers stationed abroad.

To reduce the cost of transferring an original letter through the military postal system, a V-mail letter would be censored, copied to film, and printed back to paper upon arrival at its destination.

I’m posting this information, hoping a member of the Kirk family remains in the region and would like to have these two historic letters.
