2 Portland Teens Fall To Their Deaths On Mt. Hood: Clackamas County Sheriff

Emma Place and Emily Lang, both 19, were found at the base of a waterfall along the Pacific Crest Trail Saturday, police said.

GOVERNMENT CAMP, OR β€” Two women fell to their deaths while hiking the Pacific Crest Trail Saturday, according to Clackamas County sheriff's officials. The hikers fell roughly 150 feet off a cliff northwest of Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood, but how the women fell remains unknown.

Police say Emma C. Place and Emily D. Lang, both 19 years old and from Portland, were first found by passing hikers around 5:45 p.m. Aug. 12. Multiple agencies were mobilized and on the move by 6 p.m., officials said.

Shortly before midnight Saturday, American Medical Response's Reach and Treat team made it to the fallen women and confirmed they both had died.

The pair were reportedly both graduates of St. Mary's Academy in Portland, class of 2016. On Monday, the school released the following statement on its Facebook page:

Speaking to the Oregonian, Portland Mountain Rescue Leader Steve Rollins said it looked like the women lost their footing on slippery rocks and fell from the top of a waterfall where they'd set up a camp.

"It looked like a freak accident," Rollins told the Oregonian. "A really sad freak accident."

Anyone who may have witnessed the fall or have information about this incident is asked to call the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office tip line at 503-723-4949. Tips can also be left online via this online form. Additionally, police would like to speak with anyone who was on the Pacific Crest Trail in the area between Timberline Lodge and Paradise Park before 5:45 p.m. Saturday.
