Beat The Heat At One Of Multnomah County's Water Parks

Water features and a cooling center are available to Multnomah County residents struggling to cope with the heat wave hitting the region.

GRESHAM, OR — In response to the heat wave hitting the Portland metro area this week, which forecasters say could bring the hottest temperatures the region has seen in 2018, Multnomah County officials and the city of Gresham will open a cooling center at the East County building.

Between 5 and 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, Aug. 7 - 9, folks who need to escape the heat can head to 600 N.E. Eighth St. #300 in Gresham.

Fountains and other water features throughout Multnomah County also offer cooling relief for those most susceptible to extreme temperatures. An interactive map of all the places to cool down is below and available on the official Multnomah County website.

Exposure to prolonged heat can be particularly dangerous for older adults, children, and people who work — or live — outside. The county offered the following tips to help protect yourself during this heat wave:

  • Schedule strenuous activities to early morning or late evening;
  • Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing;
  • Drink plenty of water;
  • Take frequent breaks in the shade or in air conditioned space; and
  • Know the signs of heat-related illness.
