Former Guardsman, Sex Offender Arrested For Stealing Eagle Creek Firefighter Gear, Police Say

Cody Cunningham, 23, allegedly claimed to be a firefighter in order to obtain Eagle Creek firefighting equipment Wednesday night.

TROUTDALE, OR — A former U.S. Army National Guardsman and registered sex offender was arrested after fraudulently taking firefighting equipment belonging to Eagle Creek Fire authorities, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.

Cody Scott Cunningham, 23, was lodged at the Multnomah County Detention Center on one charge of theft by deception, a misdemeanor, and for a parole violation. His bail is set at $1,000.

Cunningham allegedly claimed to be part of the Eagle Creek firefighting efforts in order to obtain firefighter gear and clothing, officials said, noting a belief that Cunningham wanted to enter homes in the evacuated areas.

After taking the gear, deputies reportedly located Cunningham after a short search Wednesday night.

Cunningham was previously convicted in 2014 for sex crimes against a minor; he was discharged from the National Guard sometime in 2014, according to court documents, though the details of his discharge are not entirely clear.
