Gresham Residents Warned of Scam

State Treasurer Ted Wheeler warns Gresham residents against a new phone scam.

The calls are deceptive.

People report they look at their caller i.d. and it says the person is calling from the Oregon State Treasurery switchboard.

The caller says they are from the State Treasury and the person they are calling owes back taxes.

And if they don't pay immediately, they will face collections.

The problem is that Treasury Department in Oregon doesn't collect taxes. it's the job of the Oregon Department of Revenue.

It appears to be a new spin on a scam where people call unsuspecting victims and claim to be calling from the I.R.S.

"Protect your finances," said Wheeler. "Just hang up."

State Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum's office maintains a website that tracks scams, the Scam Alert Network.
