Kitzhaber Latest: Former Governor Blames "Media Frenzy"

In second video, the embattled former governor says "ongoing media storm was just taking a terrible toll on my family."

John Kitzhaber seems to be taking a liking to Facebook.

The embattled former governor who is under federal investigation for allegedly abusing his power has posted a second video in as many weeks.

"Why did I resign if I knew I hadn't done anything wrong," he asks at the start.

"Ya know, that's a pretty fair question and I want to take the opportunity to explain it to you."

He says that his decision to step down was "in no way an admission of guilt."

He then dismisses a deeply reported article by Pulitzer Prize winning Nigel Jacquiss of Willamette Week that showed how his office "bent state ethic standards to suit First Lady Cyliva Hayes" as allegations that "were seized on by the broader media" and "represented as facts, with no independent verification."

This, he says, "created what I can only describe as a feeding frenzy, really, particularly on social media."

That frenzy "continued to build," he says and "at that point some people began to take these unsubstantiated allegations and use them as an excuse to oppose legislation that was very important to me, and I think important to Oregon."

And, he claims, it wasn't just his legislative session that was being affected.

"This ongoing media storm was just taking a terrible toll on my family," he writes.

"So while I was confident that the investigation would clear me of these allegations, I also knew that that process could go on for months. And here we are, over a year later, and it’s still dragging on," Kitzhaber writes.

"You know I have always tried to do the right thing—even when it hasn’t been easy—and a year ago in February, for the reasons that I’ve just explained to you, I felt that the right thing to do was to step aside."

He ends by saying, "I hope that will begin to put all of this into perspective."

In neither this video nor the one he posted two weeks ago, does Kitzhaber directly mention his fiancé, Cyliva Hayes.

The federal probe into Kitzhaber and Hayes continues.

Investigators have gone through millions of pages of documents that have been turned over by the state. Sources say that action by prosecutors could be weeks away.
