Pedestrian Safety Mission Scheduled For May 30

Gresham officers will be on the lookout for unsafe drivers during a 4-hour pedestrian safety mission on SE Stark Street Wednesday.

GRESHAM, OR — Commuters through Gresham are advised that officers with the Gresham Police Department will conduct a pedestrian safety operation in the city for several hours Wednesday afternoon/evening.

Beginning at 3 p.m. May 30, the Gresham Police Department will post officers at the intersection of Southeast Stark Street and Southeast 194th Avenue to watch for unsafe drivers and enforce pedestrian right-of-way laws.

The intersection is just east of where East Burnside Street crosses Southeast Stark Street.

The operation is scheduled to conclude at 7 p.m.

"Pedestrian safety education is vital to keeping our roads safe," Gresham Traffic Officer Scott McFarland said in a statement. "Motorists must stop and yield to pedestrians who are waiting to cross, or who are already crossing the roadway. Motorists are also required to stop at all crosswalks when there is a vehicle already stopped in a lane next to the lane they are traveling in."

The additional enforcement is reportedly made possible thanks to a grant from Oregon Impact and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Formerly the Clackamas County DUII Impact Panel, Milwaukie-based Oregon Impact organized as a nonprofit in 1998 to expand its mission to increase impaired and distracted driving awareness.
