Pedestrian Safety Operation Scheduled For Sept. 13: Gresham Police

Gresham police hope to provide pedestrian safety education and awareness to both drivers and walkers around Gresham High School Wednesday.

GRESHAM, OR — For several hours after school in Gresham tomorrow, police will conduct a pedestrian safety operation near Northeast Division Street and Northeast Roberts Avenue. The operation, police officials said, is meant to ensure drivers and pedestrians are obeying all traffic laws near Gresham High School.

Officers will setup a pedestrian decoy between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sept. 13 for the purpose of "education and enforcement of pedestrian right-of-way laws," officials said.

Reducing the number of pedestrian-related crashes in Gresham is a priority, officials said, noting that pedestrian safety is vital to keeping Gresham's roads safe for all.

Looking ahead to the operation tomorrow afternoon, Gresham police offered these reminders:

  • Pedestrians must use marked crosswalks whenever possible and motorists must stop and yield to pedestrians who are waiting to cross, or who are already crossing the roadway.
  • Motorists are also required to stop at all crosswalks when there is a vehicle already stopped in a lane next to the lane in which they are traveling.

Several cities in the Portland metro region have recently taken advantage of a grant provided by Oregon Impact and the Oregon Department of Transportation in order to conduct various pedestrian crosswalk stings, with most law enforcement agencies issuing a surprisingly high number of citations to drivers who fail to yield when required to do so.
