1. Hillsboro moves data center restrictions closer to adoption (forestgrovenewstimes.com) — Hillsboro's City Council has advanced new rules that sharply limit where large data centers can be built and temporarily require a 1,000-foot buffer from schools, with a final vote expected October 20. The ordinance would cap total data center acreage, tighten rules for smaller accessory facilities, and extend a moratorium on new proposals while the city studies environmental and neighborhood impacts.
2. Sherwood wins league opener over Glencoe 3-0 (youroregonnews.com) — High school soccer fans saw Pacific Conference play kick off in Hillsboro as Sherwood blanked Glencoe 3-0 at Hare Field on Wednesday night. The win lifts the Bowmen to the top of the league standings at 1-0, while Glencoe drops to 0-1 in conference despite a .500 overall record.
3. Woman sentenced to 18 years in 2020 Hillsboro wetlands homicide (katu.com) — A woman has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for her role in the 2020 killing of Alexis Vega-Cruz at Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve in Hillsboro, bringing a major local homicide case closer to resolution. Prosecutors say co-defendant Tyren Todd Thomas allegedly shot Vega-Cruz in retaliation, after Vallejo lured him to the wetlands; Thomas is slated for trial in early 2027.
4. 'Our communities are in pain': Oregon sees sharp rise in immigration arrests (oregonlive.com) — Hillsboro residents are grappling with heightened immigration enforcement, including at least one recent ICE arrest near Century High School and additional incidents that prompted a public statement from Hillsboro police. Advocates say arrests have surged across Oregon this week, while local school and city leaders in Hillsboro and nearby Forest Grove are trying to reassure immigrant families and rebuild trust with law enforcement.
