Hillsboro Completes LED Street Light Conversion
Switching to LEDs saves energy, cuts costs, and improves safety.
From the City of Hillsboro: One of Hillsboro’s largest-ever energy efficiency projects is now complete!
The City of Hillsboro Public Works Department has successfully converted more than 4,500 High Pressure Sodium (HPS) street lights to Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights, and added asset management nodes to every street light.
The project, unanimously approved by the City of Hillsboro Transportation Committee, is already paying off. The street light conversion has already saved 1.65 million kilowatt hours — enough to power the Brookwood Library for 16 months.

Annually, the LED lights are expected to save more than $450,000 and 2 million kilowatt hours.
The total project cost was approximately $9.6 million dollars.

LED lights improve visibility for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers, and reduce light pollution. Newly installed technology reduces energy needs, enables wireless control, and increases efficiency for maintaining and replacing lights.
