Hillsboro Firefighter Gets Badge, Fiancee

Newly sworn-in firefighter gets his badge from his girlfriend. He then drops to one knee....

It was just your typical ceremony in Hillsboro where new firefighters take the oath of office and then one of them drops to a knee and proposes to his girlfriend. Okay. Maybe not a typical ceremony.

But that's what happened Wednesday when 27-year-old Taylor Mehringer was being sworn in along with another firefighter, Chad Farber.

Battalion Chief Brian Washam - who was filling in for Chief Scott Magers, who is suffering from laryngitis - first administered the oath to Farber. He then turned to Mehringer, read him the oath and asked Mehringer's girlfriend, 31-year-old Amanda Gisler, to pin his badge on him.

She pinned Mehringer who then dropped to one knee and proposed.

She said yes.

Mehringer and Farber became firefighters after six months of intensive skills training and six months of observation to make sure that they fit in with the department.
