Hillsboro School District Announces Staffing Changes

Two new assistant principals at Hillsboro High School among the changes.

Hillsboro School's Superintendent Mike Scott announced several staffing changes through the district.

  • OJ Gulley, current assistant principal at Liberty High School, will be the next principal of Evergreen Middle School, subsequent to Rian Petrick’s selection for the new position of director of extracurricular programs and community outreach. Mr. Gulley began his career teaching U.S. History, Government, and Economics, and also serving as the varsity assistant coach for both Football and Basketball at Reynolds High School in 2005.
  • John Matsuo, current principal of Lenox Elementary School, will become an assistant principal at Hillsboro High School. Mr. Matsuo began his career teaching 2nd and 7th grades at a K-7 school in San Lorenzo, California, and coaching sports at the high school level. During that time, he was selected to join a cohort of teachers who showed potential toward educational leadership.
  • Courtney Leonard, current assistant principal at North Eugene High School, will also become an assistant principal at Hillsboro High School. Ms. Leonard began her educational career in 1999 as a Social Studies teacher at Eugene International High School. There, she taught both IB History of the Americas and IB 20th Century History. She believes in providing students with curriculum that is integrated, articulated, and global in scope, and her extensive background in IB makes her an excellent fit for Hilhi.
  • Kelly Cox, current dean of students at Roosevelt High School in Portland, will become an assistant principal at Glencoe High School. She has held her current position at Roosevelt since 2014. Says current Roosevelt vice principal Daniel Malone: “[She can] connect with students, parents, staff…and have all parties walk away feeling heard, respected and supported. Kelly Cox will make a wonderful addition to any administrative team.
  • Dani Johnson, currently a teacher on special assignment (TOSA) for the Student Services department, will become the temporary coordinator in Student Services to cover for administrative absences in the 2016-17 school year. Ms. Johnson began her career as an LRC special education assistant in the Hillsboro School District in 2003. She then became an LRC case manager and teacher in 2004 and continued serving in those capacities through 2015, at which time she assumed her current TOSA position. In addition, she has been a credit recovery teacher for the Hillsboro In-School Program (HIP) at Miller Education Center since 2010, and has also served as a new teacher mentor.
  • Alison Paulus, current principal of W.L. Henry Elementary School, has resigned her position as she has accepted a position with North Clackamas. We appreciate her years of service to Hillsboro and look forward to her future contributions in the field of education for years to come.
