Sheriff: Felon Driving Stolen Truck Crashes Into Cars, Then Tree

The Washington County Sheriff says that a man stole a F-150 truck, crashed into three cars – two of which were police cars –and a tree.

HILLSBORO, OR —A 35-year-old felon faces nearly a dozen charges after the Washington County Sheriff's Office says he led them on a chase while driving a stolen truck. He was arrested after finally driving the truck into a tree.

The incident began early Wednesday morning when a man saw a F-150 pickup stuck in a field. The man approached the driver who was trying to free the truck. The driver was then able to get the truck moving again and promptly backed into the car of the man who was helping and fled.

The man called deputies who found the truck in Hillsboro's Tanasbourne area. Deputies say the truck run a red light and drive into oncoming lanes of traffic.

The driver was able to speed away but was soon spotted by a Hillsboro police officer. He followed behind, called for backup, and watched as the truck went into a parking lot by Providence St. Vincent's Hospital.

As he drove the truck out of the lot, he hit a Beaverton police car, causing some damage. The officer was not injured.

The Hillsboro officer and deputies then used lights and sirens to try to get the man to stop. The driver then lost control of the truck, sideswiped the Hillsboro police officer's car, causing some damage – the officer was not injured – and crashed into a tree.

Anthony DeHerrera is charged with:

  • Attempted assault in the second degree
  • Reckless driving
  • Fleeing or attempting to elude police officer (Felony)
  • Recklessly endangering another person
  • Driving under the influence of intoxicants
  • Failure to perform duties of driver – two counts
  • Unlawful entry into a motor vehicle – three counts
  • Possession of weapons by certain felons
  • Possession of a stolen vehicle, and
  • Theft in the second degree
