State Trooper Shot On Christmas In Good Sprits, Says Governor After Visit

Governor Brown visitied Nic Cederburg at OHSU on Tuesday.

Nic Cederburg, the Oregon State Trooper shot during an exchange of gunfire with a homicide suspect is in good spirits, according to Governor Kate Brown who visited him and is wife on Tuesday morning.

Cederberg, 32, was shot by James Tylka who police had just shot and killed his wife. Tylka was killed during the exchange.

Brown wrote that he was "honored to meet" Cederberg and his wife, Hayley, who is a Portland Police Officer. "So grateful for his bravery on 12/25 and fighter's spirit during recovery."

Brown said afterward that she wished Cederberg a speedy recovery and that the trooper and his wife were both in good spirits.

Cederberg is a seven-year veteran of the State Police assigned to North Plains. He previously served in the United States Army.

"We consider Nic Cederberg a hero," said Oregon State Police Spokesman Capt. Bill Fugate at a press conference days after the shooting. "He undoubtedly saved the lives of members of the community and other police officers.

"He has a long road of recovery ahead of him."

The incident was the second time that Cederberg had been involved in a shooting while on duty.

In October 2015, he and another trooper were involved in a shootout with Andrew DeHart on Highway 26. DeHart fired 99 times while Cederberg and his partner fired 32 times. DeHart, who had been wanted on attempted murder and kidnapping charges, was not hit but later shot and killed himself.
