Washington County Election Results 2016: A Look at Some Key Races

From Hillsboro voting for mayor to deciding whether to merge Fire District 2 with Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue, there's lots to consider.

HILLSBORO

The race to be the 42nd mayor of Hillsboro was expected to be one of the closest in the region. Steve Callaway, the City Council President, was a teacher and principal in the Hillsboro School District for many years. He is running against Aron Carleson, the executive director of the Hillsboro Schools Foundation. Both have long time ties to the city.

Callaway won by around 4,400 votes - 57.2 percent to 41.5 percent.

Hillsboro residents are also voting on whether to allow the city to tax recreational sales of marijuana at shops within the city. The tax will only apply to recreational not medical. It passed easily.

BEAVERTON

The city has two races - one for mayor and one for city council. Neither race has any opposition so expect Mayor Denny Doyle and Councilman Mark Fagin to be reelected.

The one ballot issue of importance for Beaverton residents is to whether to fund the much needed Public Safety Center. The measure would raise $35 million that would be paid off over 20 years. It also basically acts as an extension of the library levy, which is expiring so Beaverton residents won't notice any difference in their tax bills. It narrowly won by about 600 votes.

WASHINGTON COUNTY

There are two county-wide measures on the ballot. Voters will decide whether or not to merge Washington County Fire District 2 with Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue. It would basically formalize what has been pretty much happening for months as District 2 can't survive financially. It passed.

The second one is also expected to pass fairly easily: creating a permanent tax rate of nine cents per $1,000 of assessed value to help fund the Tualatin Soil & Water Conservation District, which helps protect streams and soil quality within the county. It passed.
